Description

Users of cannabis may develop pancytopenia.

Pathogenesis: bone marrow suppression

Risk factors:

(1) long-term heavy use

The most important task is to identify or exclude other causes of pancytopenia:

(1) synthetic cannabinoids

(2) chemical additives to marijuana (pesticides, other contaminants, adulterants)

(3) infectious disease

(4) other hematologic disorders

(5) autoimmune disorder

(6) nutritional disorder (vitamin B12 deficiency, other)

The diagnosis is supported if there is recovery of hematologic parameters after cessation of cannabis use.
