Description

Krige et al developed the pancreatic injury mortality score (PIMS) to evaluate patients with significant pancreatic injury. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive management. The authors are from Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa.

Patient selection: pancreatic injury

Outcome: mortality

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) shock

(3) major vascular injury

(4) number of associated abdominal injuries

(5) American Association for the Study of Trauma (AAST) pancreatic injury scale

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 20

• The higher the score the greater the risk of mortality.
