Description

Nair et al reported the PADR-EC score for identifying an elderly community-dwelling adult who may be at risk for hospitalization due to an adverse drug reaction (ADR). The authors are from the University of Tasmania and Royal Hobart Hospital in Tasmania.

PADR-EC is an acronym for Prediction of Hospitalization due to Adverse Drug Reactions in Elderly Community Dwelling Patients

Patient selection: age >= 65 years, community-dwelling

Parameters:

(1) drug changes in the preceding 3 months

(2) renal failure

(3) dementia

(4) number of antihypertensive drugs

(5) anticholinergic drug therapy

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 13

• A score >= 6 had an odds ratio of 3.6 for hospitalization.

Performance:

• A score >= 6 has a sensitivity of 0.72 and specificity of 0.58.

• The area under the ROC curve is 0.7.
