Description

The oxygen uptake during exercise on a leg ergometer can be calculated based on the kind of leg ergometer used and the pedal rate.


 

Conditions:

• The equation is valid for power outputs of 300-1200 kg•m/min.

• The pedal rate must be known.

 

oxygen uptake in mL per minute =

= (resting oxygen uptake) + (vertical oxygen uptake)

 

resting oxygen uptake in mL/min =

= 3.5 * (body weight in kilograms)

 

vertical oxygen uptake =

= 2.0 * (power output in kg•m/min) =

= 2.0 * (kg resistance) * (meters per pedal revolution) * (pedal rate in revolutions per minute)

 

where:

• 2.0 is the regression constant for converting kg•m/min to mL/min.

• There is no horizontal component to activity.

• kilograms resistance indicates the resistance setting for the ergometer.

• The meters per pedal revolution varies with the ergometer used (3 m/rev for Tunturi and BodyGuard ergometers; 6 m/rev for Monark ergometers).

• The pedal rate ranges from 50 rpm for untrained cyclists to over 80 rpm for trained cyclists.
