Description

Microfilaria may be found in the ovaries, often as an incidental finding.

Most cases have been described in women living in an endemic region.

The patient is often asymptomatic.

Imaging of the pelvis may identify an ovarian cyst or mass. Ultrasound may show the filarial dance sign, which is diagnostic.

The patient may have a diagnosis of filariasis elsewhere.

The diagnosis is often made by review of ovarian cyst fluid or ovarian biopsy. Microfilaria are identified microscopically.

Once microfilaria are seen in the ovarian sample the blood may be sample for speciation.
