Description

Nealon et al listed criteria for determining the outcome following treatment of a pancreatic pseudocyst. The authors are from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Medical Center in Houston.

Patient seletion: pancreatic pseudocyst

Successful outcomes following an intervention on the pseudocyst:

(1) no recurrence of pseudocyst in followup imaging studies (complete resolution)

(2) absence of pain

(3) resumption of oral intake

(4) no need for hospital readmission because of pseudocyst

(5) no need for critical care because of pseudocyst

Length of hospitalization is another criterion but may overlap with hospital readmission.

Other measures of success might include:

(1) no disability

(2) ability to return to work

(3) improved quality of life
