Description

The spores of coccidioidomycosis persist in the soil of the Southwestern United States. An earthquake can result in these becoming aerosolized. A clinician should be prepared for increased cases following an earthquake if certain factors are present.

Location: Southwestern United States in an area endemic for coccidioidomycosis (San Joaquin and Simi Valleys, other).

Risk factors:

(1) large earthquake disrupting the environment, including aftershocks

(1a) landslides

(1b) sand blows

(2) dry conditions with dust clouds

(3) high winds

During the outbreak following the Northridge earthquake (California) the risk was associated with being present in a dust cloud.
