Koh et al simplified the OSTA tool to just 2 variables which can be used to identify a postmenopausal woman who should be screened for osteoporosis. The authors are from the Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians (OSTA) Research Group.
NOTE: The original OSTA tool is described previously.
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) body weight in kilograms
OST =
= INT(((body weight) - (age in years)) * 0.2)
where:
• There are several possible variations to do this calculation. In the original paper the number is truncated to an integer without any rounding.
Interpretation:
• minimum score: around -10
• maximum score: around 6
• The higher the score the lower the risk of osteoporosis.
OST
Risk of Osteoporosis
Recommendation
< -4

-4 to -1
intermediate
measure bone mineral density
> -1
low
