Description

A blaster is a person authorized to use and manage explosives.


Requirements:

(1) able to understand and give orders, both written and oral

(2) good physical condition

(3) not engaged in substance abuse (alcohol, narcotics, drugs, etc)

(4) qualified to transport, store, handle and use explosives based on training, knowledge and experience

(5) able to demonstrate competency

(6) knowledgeable about each type of blasting method used

(7) has a working knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations pertaining to explosives

 

Duties include:

(1) maintains an accurate, up-to-date record of explosives, blasting agents and blasting supplies

(2) establishes precautions to ensure safety of workers and the public in the transport, handling and use of explosives

(3) conducts all blasting operations and approves all detonations

(4) being in charge of blasting machines and connecting leading wires to a blasting machine

(5) de-energizes and locks-out power cables in the vicinity

(6) identifies and eliminates any extraneous source that may trigger a detonation

(7) holds the key for a detonator switch

(8) sets the time of a blast

(9) ensures that a site is clear of surplus explosives, vehicles, and people prior to a blast

(10) gives the warning signal prior to a blast

(11) handles misfires
