Pipetting for a long period of time may involve a number of repetitive motions that eventually can lead to musculoskeletal strain or injury.
The laboratory technologist should:
(1) If seated have the chair at an appropriate height to optimize work.
(2) Use both hands to pipette.
(3) Hold the pipetter with a relaxed grip.
(4) Use an electronic or light touch pipetting device whenever possible.
(5) Use minimal pressure while pipetting.
(6) Use a lightweight pipetter that properly fits in the hand.
(7) Use low profile tubes, containers and waste receptacles.
(8) Take a short break after every 15-20 minutes of pipetting.
Avoid:
(1) Twisting or rotating the wrists while pipetting.
(2) Exerting excessive force when changing tips.
(3) Reaching up to pipette.
(4) Excessive strain on the thumbs.
