Description

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has provided guidance for the ergonomic use of computer workstations within the laboratory.

Areas of concern:

(1) posture with back support

(2) relaxation of arms and hands, with wrists and hands in-line with forearms

(3) avoidance of static positions and pressure on sharp edges

(4) rapid transitions between manual tasks (pipetting, computer work, etc) without break

Recommendations:

(1) Keyboard platformss under laboratory benches should be adjustable and should accommodate a mouse beside the keyboard.

(2) Computer workstations should be positioned away from doors, entrances and passageways.

(3) Monitors should be placed so the viewing distance is 18 to 30 inches.

(4) The top of the monitor screen should be at eye level.

(5) A document holder should be adjacent to and at the same plane as the computer screen.

(6) Footrests should be used where possible, in order to allow change in leg position during the day.

(7) An appropriate keyboard, mouse or input device should be used if a worker has an existing musculoskeletal problem.

(8) Frequent breaks should be taken during prolonged computer work to stretch hands and legs.
