Lee et al used the oro-helical length (OHL) to predict endotracheal tube insertion depth in a neonate. The authors are from Stony Brook Children's Hospital in Stony Brook, New York.
Patient selection: neonate
Goal: insertion of the endotracheal tube tip to the T1-T2 vertebral area
Malposition: tip >= 0.5 cm above the upper border of T1 OR >= 0.5 cm below the lower border of T2
Endpoints of the measure:
(1) angle of the mouth
(2) tubercle on the ipsilateral helix of the ear
Measurement: centimeters or millimeters
The measurement is taken on both the left and right sides.
The insertion depth is the OHL.
The score is useful in neonates weighing <= 1,500 grams.
