Involvement of the globe or periorbital tissues can occur with dirofilariasis.
Normal host: domestic or wild animals
Transmission: mosquito
Dirofilaria may be found in:
(1) an eyelid
(2) the retrobulbar space (with pseudo-tumor)
(3) lacrimal gland
(4) subconjunctival
(5) anterior chamber
(6) vitreous fluid
Complications:
(1) bacterial infection (cellulitis, other)
The diagnosis is usually made by visualizing and removing the worm. Identification is based on microscopic features (diameter, thickness of the cuticle, muscular layer and longitudinal ridges).
