Oral Secretion Scale (OSS)

The Oral Secretion Scale (OSS) can be used to assess oral secretions and the patient's ability to swallow or clear secretions from the oropharynx.

Parameters:

(1) oral secretions and any drooling/pooling

(2) swallowing

Secretions	Swallowing	Score
normal	automatic	4
infrequent	decreased automatic	3
occasional drooling and/or pooling	conscious required	2
severe, frequent drooling and/or pooling	conscious swallow difficult	1
extreme, constant drooling and/or pooling	conscious swallow impossible	0
