A number of oral conditions may be associated with calcium channel blocker/antagonist therapy.
The most well-known complication of calcium channel antagonist therapy is gingival hyperplasia.
Other problems reported:
(1) deterioration in dental enamel with increased risk for caries
(2) periodontitis (in diabetics with gingival hyperplasia)
(3) increased risk for dental extractions
Risk factors of oral problems:
(1) smoking
(2) diabetes
(3) poor oral care
A person taking a calcium channel blocker may benefit from more aggressive dental management and smoking cessation.
