Description

Qat (khat, kat) chewing is primarily a habit of peoples living in Southern Arabia and Eastern Africa. Long-term use can have a number of effects on the user.


Patient selection: qat user

 

Oral complications may include:

(1) plasma cell mucositis

(2) leukoplakia

(3) oral cancer

(4) damage to teeth including periodontitis and discoloration

(5) gingival recession

 

Risk factors for malignancy:

(1) concurrent tobacco use

(2) habitual heavy use

(3) leukoplakia
