Description

Gurbuz et al evaluated patients for evidence of oral colonization with Helicobacter pylori. This can act as a reservoir for the organism that may be associated with recurrent disease. The authors are from Gulhane Military Medical Academy in Instanbul.

When to suspect the possibility of oral carriage of Helicobacter pylori:

(1) recurrent episodes of Helicobacter pylori gastritis not explained by antibiotic resistance or noncompliance

(2) presence of dental plaque

The presence of Helicobacter can be rapidly confirmed by performing the CLOtest for urease activity using a scraping of the dental plaque material.

Confirmation of the diagnosis involves cure of the Helicobacter pylori following eradication of oral carriage AND treatment of the gastric infection.
