Synonym: mucosal contact urticaria, food contact hypersensitivity syndrome (FCHS)
Clinical features:
(1) The patient often has a history of atopy.
(2) The patient develops an allergic reaction in the mucosa of the mouth or throat after inhaling pollen or eating food to which the person is sensitive
(3) The allergic reaction may range from mild to severe with:
(3a) edema and swelling of the lips, tongue and oropharyngeal mucosa
(3b) urticaria with pruritus of the oropharyngeal mucosa
(3c) discomfort or pain in the mouth or throat
(3d) generalized reaction including anaphylaxis
(4) The reaction may stop if the patient swallows the material or spits it out.
(5) The patient will show an allergic reaction to the causative antigen on skin testing.
Prevention:
(1) Avoid foods that cause the reaction.
(2) Heating and cooking the foods may denature the allergen.
