Trichosporon is a yeast that usually involves the hair. However, it can cause invasive disease in a patient who is immunosuppressed.
At risk populations:
(1) organ transplant
(2) acute leukemia (ALL, AML, MDS) or other hematologic malignancy
(3) autoimmune disease
(4) primary immunodeficiency
(5) AIDS
(6) severe burn
(7) other debilitating disease
Types of opportunistic infection:
(1) subcutaneous abscess
(2) fungemia with disseminated disease
(3) involvement of the central nervous system
(4) pneumonia
(5) peritonitis
Risk factors for a worse outcome:
(1) neutropenia
(2) resistance to antifungal agents
