Description

Abuse of opioids may be associated with an amnestic syndrome.


Risk factors:

(1) fentanyl (and possibly other synthetic opioids)

(2) other psychotropic drugs (gabapentin, cocaine, etc)

 

Clinical features:

(1) severe memory deficits, including antegrade and retrograde amnesia

(2) preserved language and spatial functioning

(3) exclusion of pre-existing amnesia and other causes (hypoxemia, ischemia, infectious, toxic)

 

MRI findings:

(1) bilateral hippocampal restricted diffusion, with hyperintensity on FLAIR sequence, involving the cornuammonis
