A patient with neuroblastoma may have one or more ophthalmologic findings, some of which may impact prognosis.
Patient selection: neuroblastoma
Frequency of ophthalmologic findings: about 16%
Sources of findings:
(1) direct metastasis
(2) paraneoplastic effect
(3) complication
Ophthalmologic findings may include:
(1) orbital involvement (see below)
(2) opsoclonus
(3) Horner syndrome
(4) cranial nerve palsy
(5) visual field loss secondary to stroke
(6) superficial epithelial keratitis
Orbital involvement may include:
(1) proptosis
(2) lid ecchymosis
(3) lid swelling
(4) optic neuropathy
(5) orbital mass
(6) intraocular lesion
(7) restriction of extraocular motility
The presence of orbital involvement was associated with a worse prognosis.
The presence of opsoclonus or Horner syndrome was associated with a more favorable prognosis.
