Exposure to a high-pressure water jet from a fire hose can cause significant eye injury.
Risk factors:
(1) higher pressures
(2) lack of adequate eye protection
(3) fooling around
(4) intoxication
(5) accidental discharge or dropping of fire hose
Injuries may include:
(1) eyelid edema and/or ecchymosis
(2) subconjunctival hemorrhages or chemosis
(3) hyphema
(4) rupture of the iris sphincter
(5) increased intraocular pressure
(6) commotio retinae
(7) decreased visual acuity
(8) vitrious hemorrhages
Often ocular injuries are bilateral although the eyes may show different types of injuries.
