Description

Paintball is a popular game that can cause serious ocular trauma if the rules are not followed. It can result in reduced vision including blindness.


Risk factors for eye injury:

(1) failure to wear eye protection

(2) substandard eye protection

(3) removal of eye protection

(4) hard ball material

(5) intoxication

(6) failure to enforce rules, including lack of a referee

(7) failure to understand the hazards

(8) fooling around

(9) accidental discharge

 

Injuries to the anterior segment:

(1) hyphema

(2) crystalline lens dislocation/subluxation

(3) traumatic cataract

(4) secondary glaucoma

(5) iridodialysis

 

Injuries to the posterior segment:

(1) commotio retinae

(2) choroidal rupture

(3) retinal tear

(4) traumatic macular hole

(5) vitreous hemorrhage

(6) scleral rupture
