Foam bullets or darts shot from a nonpower gun is intended to be a safe toy for children. However, even relatively safe toys can cause eye damage, even in adults.
Selection: foam bullet or dart shot from a non-powder gun (nerf gun, other)
Mean age: 16 years
Risk factors for trauma:
(1) direct eye impact
(2) higher velocity
(3) modified foam bullet or dart
(4) higher risk toy brand
(5) lack of any eye protections
Ocular trauma:
(1) corneal abrasion
(2) retinal tear or detachment
(3) open globe (globe rupture)
(4) intra-ocular hemorrhage
(5) damage to the iris
(6) post-injury ocular hypertension
