Description

Jellyfish may rarely cause ocular stings.


Patient selection: jellyfish sting to the eye caused by a tentacle crossing the eye

 

Risk factors:

(1) absence of goggles or face mask

(2) presence of large numbers of jellyfish

 

Clinical presentation:

(1) ocular pain

(2) facial swelling and inflammation

(3) decreased visual acuity

(4) allergic symptoms

(5) photophobia

(6) systemic signs of toxicity

 

Clinical ocular effects may include:

(1) keratitis and/or corneal stromal edema

(2) conjunctivitis

(3) inflammation in the anterior chamber

(4) iritis

(5) eyelid swelling

 

Complications:

(1) retinopathy with or without retinal vascular occlusion and ischemia

(2) secondary bacterial infection

(3) increased intraocular pressure, including glaucoma

(4) loss of accommodation

(5) mydriasis

(6) peripheral anterior synechiae
