Description

A person may be exposed to nitrogen oxides in a number of occupations or other settings.


 

Situations where a person may be exposed to nitrogen oxides:

(1) farming, gardening or other source of organic decomposition

(2) working in a grain silo

(3) producing or handling rocket fuel or being in a missile silo

(4) burning fossil fuels including kerosene, natural gas and gasoline

(5) firefighting

(6) manufacturing explosives

(7) electric arc welding

(8) manufacturing of dyes and lacquers

(9) manufacturing nitric acid

(10) manufacturing or handling celluloid or nitrocellulose

 

When a person presents with possible nitrogen oxide exposure it is important to ask about the person's occupation, hobbies, and recent destinations. The person may remember seeing a colored vapor at the time of the exposure (nitrogen dioxide is yellow to reddish brown).
