Occupational exposure to fine capsaicin dust or capsaicin fumes can result in respiratory symptoms.


Workers at risk: chili grinders, hot pepper sauce makers, chefs

 

Type of exposure: chemical irritant

 

Clinical features:

(1) cough

(2) increased airway resistance

 

Risk factors:

(1) heavy capsaicin dust exposure

(2) cigarette smoking

(3) male sex
