Description

A small child under the age of 5 years needs to have nutrition managed during the episode.

Breastfeeding is maintained during and after rehydration.

Avoid fruit juices or carbonated drinks until the diarrhea has stopped and the child has recovered.

Oral rehydration solution (ORS) is the preferred fluid for replacement.

If the child is without serious signs of dehydration ("red flags") then water or milk feeds can be given if the child refuses ORS.
