Description

A patient with the myelodysplastic syndrome who shows poor nutritional status has a worse prognosis.

Patient selection: myelodysplastic syndrome

Nutritional indices:

(1) PNI (prognostic nutritional index) of Onodera et al, based on serum albumin and absolute lymphocyte count

(2) CONUT score (controlling nutritional status score), based on serum albumin, absolute lymphocyte count and total cholesterol, from 0 to 12

PNI score

Group

Median Overall Survival (Figure 2)

< 44

low score (high risk)

20 months

>= 44

high score (low risk)

26.5 months

CONUT score

Group

Median Overall Survival

< 5.5

low score (low risk)

17.2 months

>= 5.5

high score (high risk)

11 months

Prognostic factors associated with worse prognosis from multivariate analysis (Qian et al):

(1) high CONUT score

(2) thrombocytopenia

(3) median and high risk IPSS-R
