Description

A large volcanic eruption can have a major impact on the nutrition of people around the world.


 

Impact on people near the volcano:

(1) fouling of the water supply with ash, acid and gases

(2) death of freshwater fish in lakes contaminated by ash and lava

(3) loss of crops from falling ash

(4) destruction of food stores

(5) destruction of farming equipment and/or irrigation channels

 

Impact on animal livestock:

(1) destruction of grazing

(2) death from

(2a) collapse of barns

(2b) falling tephra

(2c) pyroclastic flows

(2d) tsunami if near the coast

(2e) toxic gases

(2f) fires

(2g) lahar (mudflow)

(3) bowel impaction and obstruction as ingested ash mixes with fluids within the intestines

 

Remote impact:

(1) drop in global temperatures, which can result in crop failures if severe
