Rood et al reported a numeric rating scale (NRS) for describing the quality of sleep for a patient in the intensive care unit. This is a simple score that can be implemented as part of routine care. The authors are from Radboud University Medical Center in The Netherlands.
Patient selection: patient in the intensive care unit
The numeric rating scale is a visual analogue scale from 0 to 10.
A score of 0 indicates the worse possible night's sleep, while indicates the best sleep possible.
A score of 6 was median for the ICU population. A score >= 6 was considered sufficient.
Reasons for suboptimal sleep:
(1) pain
(2) noise
(3) light
(4) frequent wakenings
The NRS could not be completed if the patient was:
(1) comatose or sedated
(2) uncooperative
(3) delirious
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve was reported as 0.86.
