Description

The Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) is a simple measure of pain.


Type: visual analogue scale (VAS), from 0 (none) to 10 cm (worst imaginable)

 

The VAS score can be multiplied by 10 to give a score ranging from 0 to 100.

0.1 to 1.0

very mild

1.1 to 3.9

mild

4.0 to 6.0

moderate

6.1 to 9.0

severe

9.1 to 10.0

very severe to extreme

 

There is some variation in how the NRS translates to a verbal pain level. The above is approximate.
