Description

Novichok is a group of organophosphorus nerve agents developed and used by the Russians. Other organophosphorus nerve agents have also been developed.


Novichok is Russian for newcomer or novice.

 

Mechanism: inhibits acetylcholinesterase

 

Toxidrome - acute cholinergic crisis

(1) bronchorrhea

(2) bronchospasm

(3) bradycardia

(4) convulsions

 

If untreated death is rapid from asphyxiation and cardiac arrest.

 

Therapy may include atropine, oximes, paraoxonase and ventilatory support.

 

Contact with the patient can be hazardous if decontamination has not been performed or if personal protective equipment is not worn.

 

A person who survives that acute episode can develop neurologic deficits.
