Description

Mycoplasma pneumoniae can cause nosocomial pneumonia affecting patients, staff and visitors. There may be only a few people affected or large numbers.

Outbreaks tend to be more common during the winter or spring.

Signs and symptoms:

(1) fever

(2) cough, which may be prolonged

(3) upper respiratory tract infection (sore throat, rhinitis)

(4) pneumonia

(5) headache

(6) fatigue

People may ignore the symptoms if mild or intermittent. Such cases may go unrecognized.

The availability of molecular amplification technology allows for rapid identification of cases but can be expensive. Serologic testing can be insensitive and nonspecific.
