Description

Normalization is a social process related to displayed behaviors and beliefs. It is an important part of what is considered a culture.

Normalization for a social group involves:

(1) determining which ideas and actions are considered normal and acceptable versus those that are considered abnormal and unacceptable

(2) accepted behaviors are taken for granted and viewed as natural or normal

This can be used for good or evil.

Some societies may make certain topics or actions taboo. If these are normal human behaviors, then these prohibitions are unwarranted. On the other hand, certain behaviors are degenerate or evil and calling them "normal" is dangerous.

Attempts to control behavior through normalization may take the form of indoctrination, propaganda, intimidation or violence. It is a common feature of cults. It can also be used as a demonstration of being in control.
