Description

Blue sclerae can occur with genetic and nongenetic/acquired conditions. An acquired cause is associated with a history of white sclerae in the past.


Disorders that may be associated with blue sclerae:

(1) acquired POEMS syndrome

(2) argyria

(3) Caplan syndrome

(4) HIV

(5) hyperhomocysteinemia

(6) iron deficiency anemia

(7) myasthenia gravis

(8) nevus of Ota

 

Medications associated with blue sclerae:

(1) minocycline

(2) mitoxantrone

(3) prednisone

(4) ezogabine or retigabine
