Description

A "non-negative" drug test result covers any result that is not negative. It is ambiguous and potentially confusing.

Non-negative test results include:

(1) confirmed positive

(2) refusal to test (including substitution or adulteration)

(3) cancelled test

(4) invalid test results

A canceled or invalid test usually requires recollection of a sample, sometimes under direct observation.

A positive test or refusal to test that has been verified by the medical review officer (MRO) can result in the worker losing his or her job.

If the company has an appropriate stand-down policy then it may be necessary to notify the designated employer representative (DER) of a non-negative result before the result has been verified.
