Description

Xin et al reported a nomogram for predicting delirium in an older adult after repair of a hip fracture. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Second Military Medical University in Shangai.

Patient selection: elderly adult (>= 65 years) with hip fracture after operative repair

Exclusion: ASA 5

Parameters:

(1) preoperative cognitive impairment

(2) number of medical comorbidities

(3) ASA class (from 1 to 4)

(4) number of RBC units transfused

(5) postoperative ICU stay

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 23.7

• The higher the score the greater the risk for postoperative delirium.

risk of postoperative delirium in percent=

= (0.0519 * ((score)^2)) + (1.582 * (score)) + 6.825
