Description

Bevan et al reported a nomogram for predicting oral feeding intolerance in a patient with acute pancreatitis. This can help to identify a patient who may require more aggressive nutritional support. The authors are from the University of Auckland in New Zealand.

Patient selection: acute pancreatitis

Outcome: failure of oral feeding

Parameters:

(1) nausea and vomiting subscore from the Gastroparesis cardinal symptoms index (GCSI)

(2) etiology of the pancreatitis

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 153

• The higher the score the greater the risk of oral feeding intolerance.

probability of oral feeding intolerance =

= (0.4292 * (score)) + 14.292

probability of oral feeding intolerance =

= (-0.00001323*((score)^3)) + (0.0033548 * ((score)^2)) + (0.20032 * (score)) + 17.591
