Description

A person who shoots a shoulder firearm (rifle, shotgun, assault rifle) is at increased risk for noise-induced hearing loss.


 

Features of a shoulder firearm related hearing loss:

(1) characteristic notch of maximum hearing loss in the interval from 4,000 to 6,000 Hz

(2) occurrence of the notch is greater in the ear opposite to the shoulder against which the buttstock rests (left ear if right handed, right ear if left handed; the affected ear is closer to the muzzle blast)

 

The best ways to avoid hearing loss

(1) to wear ear protection or cover the ears when anyone is firing a gun.

(2) not to fire unnecessarily

(3) to avoid any other high-level sounds (engines, other)
