Description

Excessive noise can disrupt sleep and cause sleep deprivation.


Noise may:

(1) cause awakening

(2) reduce the depth/quality of sleep

 

Examples:

(1) living near transport (roads, airports, trains), factories or other sources of noise (wind turbines, etc)

(2) living near a place of celebration or partying

(3) ICU patient

 

Factors determining if noise will disrupt sleep:

(1) intensity of the noise

(2) nature of the noise

(3) accompanying vibrations and/or bright lights

(4) depression, illness or other reasons for poor sleep

(5) other reasons for poor sleep (excessive room temperature, other)

(6) ability to block or reduce the noise (sound insulation, headphones, etc)

(7) hyperacusis

(8) acclimatization

(9) sleep medication
