Description

Goenen et al studied patients with colon cancer who had lymph nodes negative for metastatic tumor. They developed an equation for predicting the likelihood that the patient really did not have lymph node metastases based on the number of lymph odes examined and the T Stage. The authors are from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.


 

Patient selection: colon adenocarcinoma with negative lymph nodes

 

Parameters:

(1) number of lymph nodes examined

(2) T stage of the tumor

 

For each T stage (T1, T2, T3, T4) and number of negative lymph nodes (1, 5, 8, 10, 12 ,15, 18, 20, 25) the authors reported the likelihood that the patient really is node negative.

In general, the a high number of negative lymph nodes is needed to be confident that the patient truly is node negative.
