Description

Nocturnal polyuria can be caused by a number of conditions.

Nocturnal polyuria involves increased nocturnal urine volume, which is greater than 20-30% of the total 24 hour urine volume. Nocturnal urine output is affected by age.

Causes of nocturnal polyuria:

(1) circadian defect in secretion or action of antidiuretic hormone (ADH)

(2) evening intake of fluids (excessive, caffeine, alcohol)

(3) diuretic effect

(4) congestive heart failure (CHF)

(5) autonomic dysfunction

(6) estrogen deficiency

(7) renal insufficiency

(8) sleep apnea syndrome

where:

• The first 3 conditions are associated with water diuresis while the next 5 involve water and solute.
