Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a toxic compound that may be found as a contaminant in a variety of drug preparations.
Toxic effects:
(1) hepatotoxicity
(2) carcinogen
Source:
(1) contaminated ingredients
(2) interaction between chemicals used in drug synthesis, such as between a solvent and a nitrite reagent
Drugs that have been found to contain NDMA:
(1) valsartan
(2) ranitidine (Zantac)
(3) metformin
The amount of NDMA may increase during storage, especially if ambient temperatures are high.
