Jobe and Bancalari reported on an NIH consensus conference on bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Bronchopulmonary dysplasia occurs when a very premature lung is acutely injured by either oxygen or mechanical ventilation.
Patient selection: Need for supplemental oxygen (FIO2 > 0.21) for >= 28 days

Gestational Age < 32 weeks
mild
oxygen not needed at 36 weeks postmenstrual age or at discharge
moderate
oxygen at FIO2 < 0.3 at 36 weeks postmenstrual age or at discharge
severe
oxygen at FIO2 >= 0.3 and/or positive pressure ventilation at 36 weeks postmenstrual age or at discharge
Severity
