Jentzer et al evaluated the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio for evaluation of a patient with cardiogenic shock. The authors are from the Mayo Clinic, University Health Network Toronto, University of Toronto, University of Alberta and Ted Rogers Centre for Heart Research (Toronto).
Patiient selection: cardiogenic shock
Parameters:
(1) neutrophil count in the peripheral blood
(2) lymphocyte count in the peripheral blood
neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio =
= (neutrophil count) / (lymphocyte count)
Interpretation:
• A ratio >= 7 is associated with a higher in-hospital mortality.
Ratio
Ranges
< 3.5
< 1x ULN
3.5 to 6.9
1 to 1.99x ULN
7 to 14
2 to 3.99x ULN
> 14
> 4x ULN
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.70.
