Description

Gorschluter et al used criteria to diagnose neutropenic enterocolitis in patients with acute leukemia following chemotherapy. The authors are from the University of Bonn, Germany.


 

Selection: Patients with neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count < 500 per µL)

 

Criteria - all of the following:

(1) presence of fever

(2) one or both of the following: significant abdominal pain, diarrhea

(3) ultrasonographic demonstration of bowel wall thickening

 

where:

• Fever was an axillary temperature > 38°C or rectal temperature > 38.5°C.

• Diarrhea was the occurrence of > 3 liquid stools per day in the absence of laxatives.

• Significant abdominal pain was a response >= 3 on a Likert scale ranging from 0 to 10.

• Ultrasonographic thickening was present when the wall thickness was > 4.0 mm.
