Description

A patient with a subarachnoid hemorrhage may develop one or more neuropsychiatric sequelae.


Neuropsychiatric findings may include:

(1) agitation or aggression

(2) anxiety

(3) apathy

(4) appetite or eating disturbance

(5) catastrophic reaction

(6) cognitive impairment

(7) delirium

(8) denial of illness

(9) depression

(10) fatigue

(11) irritability

(12) personality change

(13) post-traumatic stress disorder

(14) psychosis

 

The neuropsychiatric finding should either be of new onset or a worsening of an existing finding.

 

There should not be another diagnosis that can explain the findings better.

 

Modifying factors:

(1) concurrent traumatic brain injury

(2) hydrocephalus

(3) pre-existing psychiatric disorder

(4) alcohol or drug abuse
