Description

Galer and Jensen reported the Neuropathic Pain Scale (NPS) for evaluating a patient with neuropathic pain. It can be monitored over time to observe changes with disease activity and interventions. The authors are from the University of Washington in Seattle.


Patient selection: neuropathic pain

 

Parameters:

(1) intensity of the pain

(2) sharpness of the pain

(3) hot sensation

(4) dull sensation

(5) cold sensation

(6) skin sensitivity

(7) itchy sensation

(8) unpleasant sensation

(9) intensity of deep pain sensation

(10) intensity of surface pain sensation

(11) time quality of pain

 

For parameters 1 through 10 the response is a VAS from 0 to 10, with 0 none and 10 most intense imaginable).

 

For parameter 11 (time quality of the pain) the responses are one of the following:

(1) background pain all of the time with occasional flare-ups of breakthrough pain

(2) single type of pain all of the time

(3) single type of pain sometimes with periods pain free
