Description

A patient with a neuropathy may develop a neuropathic arthropathy of the shoulder.


 

Clinical features:

(1) The patient has a neurologic disorder affecting one or both upper extremities.

(2) The shoulder joint develops an arthropathy causing pain and instability.

(3) Imaging studies show marked joint destruction and disorganization.

(4) Variable involvement of the elbow and hand.

(5) Exclusion of other possible causes.

 

The neuropathic state may be associated with:

(1) syringomyelia, often due to an Arnold-Chiari malformation

(2) tabes dorsalis

(3) diabetic neuropathy

(4) other peripheral neuropathies
